Thomas Latch states as follows. I am the son of Joseph
Latch who is a Merchant residing nearly opposite the Westgate Inn
in the Town of Newport - On the morning of Monday the 4th
November about 9 Oclock I went to the Westgate Inn I had
been there about 3 minutes when I heard the cry of "They are coming
the Chartists are coming". I immediately ran into one of the side rooms
accompanied by Mr Richard Waters. He opened the window shutter
I heard some cheering and immediately a body of men arrived with Guns
pikes and other weapons passed around under the window. When
about 100 had passed, I saw John Frost also pass along the
pavement under the window, he had a black hat on and a Pilot Coat
buttoned up quite close to the throat -
In about 2 minutes after I saw Frost pass, the firing commenced
and I immediately retreated to the back part of the Westgate Inn -
I had known Frost from my Childhood, & I am quite sure I was
not mistaken in his person -
He was the only person I recognised -
Call Thomas Latch
