Thomas Latch states as follows - I am the
son of Joseph Latch who is a Merchant
residing nearly opposite the Westgate
Inn in the Town of Newport - on the
morning of Monday the 4th November
about 9 o'clock I went over to the
Westgate Inn - I had been
there about 3 minutes when I heard
the cry of "they are coming the
Chartists are coming" I immediately
ran into one of the side rooms
accompanied by Mr Richard Waters.
he opened the Window & immediately
a body of men armed with Guns
Pikes and other weapons passed -
around under the window - when
about 100 had passed I saw John
Frost - also pass along the pavement
under the window, he had a black
Hat on and a Pilot Coat buttoned
up quite close to the throat

In about 2 minutes after I saw Frost
pass the firing commenced and
I immediately retreated to the back
part of the Westgate Inn I had
known Frost from my Childhood
am quite sure I was
not mistaken in his person
He was the only person I -
recognised -
Thomas Latch
