Edward Miles between 16th and 17th years of age of

Stow Hill Newport - I live with Mr Hopkins the Baker at Stow Hill -

I remember being in the house on Monday the 4th November instant at about

9 o'Clock in the morning and heard people coming coming down the Hill I had

heard that the Chartists were expected I went to the Door from my Breakfast

to see what it was - a large mob of men armed with Guns pikes and such like

going down the Hill - I could not eat any more Breakfast - I went out in

the street shortly afterwards - I heard the firing down at the Westgate

Shortly after I saw the prisoner running up the Hill - I will swear it was

the Prisoner - he was dressed in a dark rough frock Coat with fur or curly

hair collar and a low crowned Hat - he had something in his hands which

appeared as a weapon there were two persons with me one of them is named

Lewis a carpenter who is gone to his Uncle at Liverpool - the other man is

David Evans who lives at Malpas and apprenticed to a Carpenter
