Dear Sir
On highly respectable recommendation
I have accepted a Retainer to
defend Wm Davis (Son of Roger Davis
of Blackwood) against a charge agst
him for having been a Party in
the late Chartist Riots - I have
accepted this Retainer because
I am impressed with the conviction
that this Young Man is innocent
and unless I had such conviction I
would have nothing to do in
this matter & if any thing yet comes
to my knowledge to induce me to
think that the witnesses whom I shall
Produce are telling untruths I will

give up the Case - It is as
______& correct &c
important ^ in my opinion that
the innocent should be acquitted
than the guilty should be
condemned - I shall depend on you
to give me notice when the
Prisoner is to be brought before
the Magistrates that I may
attend & you will oblige me
by also dropping a Line to the
Prisoner's father "Roger Davis
Shop Keeper Blackwood" to
inform him when the Case will
be called on that he may
bring his witnesses down in
time - I shall be Engaged on
Friday Between 11 & 3 o Clock

at the meeting of the Canal Co. on
that day therefore I shall feel obliged
to the Magistrates not to fix that
day for the hearing of this Case -
I shall depend on you & the Magistrates
courtesy in that respect.
I have ser-d the Commission
to day with orders to summon
the Grand Jury for the 10th
Dec- r at 10 o' Clock -
I am directed to summon 300
Petit Jurymen which will be
a difficult Task I assure you

Your reply by return will
oblige ...[?]Believe me Yr hon -l
