Newport 21st. Decr 1839. 138
My dear Sir
I should have sent you Wm Davies's
further Evidence had I been able to have seen him,
he has been from home & will return I understand
to day, when I will look out for him & send you
all I can get by Monday's post, with the additional
lists of Witnesses, some of whom will be found as
or more important than any we have yet had
particularly as to Frost giving the order to fire
There is yet a mystery about Turner - It is clear
there were 3 wooden legged men at the Westgate & at
Newport the morning of the 4th. - Pillinger, the man
who was apprehended last week was examined to
day & committed for the minor offence of conspiracy
& riot - He came down with the mob, but we cannot
as yet identify him at the Westgate - as it is most
important to get at the man against whom we have

Page 2:
additional Evidence of loading and firing 3 times
at the Soldiers the Magistrates have issued a Warrant
against a third man, a Pensioner who is known
to have been from home that day -
I do not anticipate the objection you allude to
as to the notices not being served upon all the Prisrs.
indeed there was not time to have done so with safety as
we were driven to the last moment - I have kept
duplicate copies of each notice served, thinking that
the safest mode - as I confess I see very great objection
to the mode of service of the original Lists - and I may
be wrong in the view I take but I feel there will be
very great difficulty to support the service (if the
objection be taken) in consequence of the Headings
to the Lists to served being filled in with the name
of each prisoner, whilst only one copy in blank
(as to the name) was kept to prove the service upon

each of the 3 prisoners served by Mr Evans, yourself
Mr Phillips
& Mr Raven - I trust nothing will arise
from such an objection but the more I think of the
case, the greater difficulty I see in it -
_____________ I remain dear Sir &c
