a shoemaker at Blackwood - I heard Zephaniah
Williams say at the Oak - Come men fall in 5 deep to your
ranks and every 11th man take care of the ten - you know
your numbers - we then marched on from the Welsh
Oak the word March having been given by Williams -
We then went on until we got into Sir Cha's Morgan's Park.
Mr Frost there took the lead of the men - I heard Mr
Frost in the Park say Let the men with the muskets come
in front and the Pikemen next - & them as got no Pikes
or Guns will keep in the rear - I then got up on the foot
path and I ran away along the footpath - I went to
Mr Williams's the Machine in Tredegar Park. I asked
Mr Williams how he & his Wife were, he said he was
very well, she was rather poorly - He asked me to have
a Cup of Beer which I got - He looked and asked me
"Are you with those Chaps?" he saw them coming down
by the Ladies Well which is in the Park, I said I had
run away from them - He said For God's sake don't
stay here - don't tell anybody that you have been here -
I went on before the crowd until I came to the Waterloo
Inn - I called in for a pint of Beer and I waited there until
they went past - I went on till I got opposite Cross St.

in the town of Newport where I saw Habbakuk
Monkey's Row a former Landlord of mine
whilst I was with Mr Perkins
^ I went to his house and there I stopped and got dinner there.
I saw a Chaise at the Welsh Oak coming down towards Newport
they stopped the chaise and would not let it proceed, they
told the Driver - if he offered to go on they would
shoot one of the horses - I sawYoung Davies at the Welsh
Oak and afterwards at Pye Corner where he passed us on
horseback towards Newport. He was very active in the
crowd - John Frost was very active - Young Edmunds
was also very active - He is the oldest son of Wm Edmunds
the last place I saw young Edmunds was in front of the
Waterloo with Frost & two others whom I do not know -
they were armed and in front of the Mob leading them
Just before they came to the Waterloo I heard John Frost
tell them to fall in - I saw Henry Harris who keeps the
Star at Pontllanfraith with us all the way along - he
carried a Gun and a large quantity of candles in his pockets.
I heard him tell the men to come on come, x don't keep behind,
any man that deserts will be shot - I heard George
Tillett say - remember my men an eye shall be kept upon
you and every man that don't turn out shall be shot.
I saw a man of the name of Beech a collier at Gelly grose,

he ordered the men to fall in - He carried a Gun or a Pike -
A man of the name of Griff a Blacksmith working at
Gellygrose carried a double barrelled gun - I took the
gun out of his hands at Risca and looked at it, he came
down with us all the way to Newport - I saw the
hook now produced at the Rising Sun in the hand of
Tom Nailer a Collier who works at the Bryn Works -
It was bent and he put it into the fire - I saw him take
it out and straighten it with a hammer. The last place
I saw Tom Nailer was at a Blacksmith's shop at Waterloo
he had then the hook in his possession - some had Hay
forks, some had spears, some had cleavers - one or two
had scythes, 3 or 4 had swords - several had mandrills
A man of the name of Jack Barrill blew the bugle -
I saw him all the way until they passed the Waterloo -
he sounded it 2 or 3 times, he is a Collier and lives near
the Greyhound - he lives between the Star and Thomas
Knights - He was Secretary for the Men's Club and
Secretary for the Women's Club - He used to collect from
20/- to 30/- every night of the Meeting - they paid 2d a
night there was gatherings besides - some threw in a
Sovereign, some 10/- some a crown, some half a crown

and some a shilling some 6d and some 3 pence - Jack
Barrill collected that - that to form a fund for to clear
them that was in Prison - it was called the defence fund
William Williams a Collier at Pentwynmawr was very
active, he had some weapon in his hand - I saw him first
on the Tram road at Gelly grose - He ordered the men to
fall in. I saw him in the Park, he was ordering there, he
was one of the leading men, he walked abreast of the 10th
man - Williams the Shoemaker of Blackwood had a
Pike - I saw him first at Gelly grose , he was a leading
man. He came down all the way - I saw him come
through the Machine Gate out of the Park - I saw
John Batten's two sons - I saw them at Gelly grose , one
had a cleaver, it was Bill had a cleaver and the other had
some weapon - I saw them in the Park - I saw them
coming out of the Park through the Gate - I saw them
at Pye Corner and I saw them at the Welsh Oak and I saw
them at the Waterloo - they were very active - Fisher
carried a mandril - when we came to Risca Haynes had
one of the handles of the mandrill - they were very active
