Benjamin Strickland of Quarry Mawr in the
Parish of Machen Agent to the Sirhowy Tram road
Co (Householder) - states - On Sunday night
the 3.rd November a number of men knocked at
my door & said they wanted lights, I opened my
door for fear they should break it open, they
came in took 4lbs of candles & a new Lantern -
I should not know any of these again -
About 12 - O clock I went to the Full Moon,
kept by Henry Lewis of Machen to see if I
could recognize any of those that had been in
my house, but I could not - I there saw ^ young Thos
Batten & said to him, " go home my boy
to your business " - I also saw Edward Pillinger
there - he said to me " Mr Strickland will you
drink " & tendered a pint which he had in his
hand to me - I refused - I went away
___________about 3 O clock
from the Full Moon, & left him there - It then
rained very hard - I have not seen Pillinger
_______He did not appear to be around
since ^ - I should know one man who held a

long gun to my ear - he had a hat on when he went
down but I saw him again Monday
morning about 11 O clock coming back from the
direction of Newport, he had then a red hand kerchief
round his head & apparently, the same gun -
