Herbert Davies & Watkin Moses</person of Crosspenmain Monythusloyne Collier - of the Waterloo Colliery Monythusloyne
Collier states We
and John Davies have were members of a Chartist
Lodge at the Ivy Bush at Crosspenmain but the
last meeting was held on Saturday the 2nd November
at the May pole - old David Stephens was Chairman
He told us he wanted us to settle about having a
Governor over every 10 - & wishes every one to raise
his hand in favor of doing that - but we & many
others were against it - there were from 30 to 40
present - He also said we should be called upon
soon - We asked " what to do" he said he was under
oath not to tell us - We then went away & considered
the Lodge broken up - On the next Evening (Sunday)
about 7 Oclock (having heard during the day that
some thing was stirring) We went in company with
&</del> John Davies to the Navigation Inn
to ascertain what was doing - We went into the
Club Room - there was no one there then but
our party - When we had been there about 1/4 of an
hour () Jones the
Watchmaker came in with 2 others - they

did not appear to be armed - Jones asked us what
Lodge we belonged to - we said we could not agree -
He then asked us who our Captain was - we said
Old David Stephens - He then asked us where were
our arms - we told him we had none - he then
asked us why we did not carry mandrils with us
as there was nothing better - He drew a pistol out
of his pocket and shewed it us, & put it back again
without making any remark - We asked him
which way he was going - He said through Pontypool
& that we might come along with him - We said
no - He then said "I don't want you for to do anything
But I'll venture this (drawing his hand across
his neck) that we shall have a flag on the top of
Newport Church Tower, before 10 Oclock tomorrow
morning" - He also said that he expected Zephaniah
Williams & his men down in about half an hour (it was then 1/2 past 7 by this Clock
- .Jones & the men with him staid in the house about 1/4 of an hour -
We staid till about 1/4 past 10 & then went home
we saw nothing of Zephaniah Williams -

John Davies of Rhiw Sir David Monythusloyne Collier says
In the summer of 1839. I joined the
Chartist Lodge held at the Coach & Horses - & paid 6d
I only attended once - I never attended any other Chartist
Lodge until Saturday night the 2nd November when
I went to the May Pole with Herbert Davies & Watkin
Moses to see what was going on - I have heard
their evidence read over & can speak to the whole
of it except that I did not see W[illia]mJones's pistol
owing to their being between me & him - I saw
him apparently put his hand into his pocket
at the time - Davies & Moses told me of the
pistol immediately Jones went out -
