James Emery of Pontypool Cabinet maker abiding
at the House of Ann Mitchell of Sow Hill in the Parish of
Trevethin - saith - I joined a Chartist Lodge held at the
Bristol house Pontypool kept by Jones the Watchmaker
about a week before the 4th November - I paid 6d for a
Card - (I had attended meetings at that House before but
was not a member) - *On Wednesday night in that week
in left margin :- *30th Oct[ober]

in left margin against the following sentence:- I was at Jones
- a letter was read by John Davis the secretary of the association which he said was sent from Mr Frost to the Chartist association
Pontypool - but the signature was cut out - the secretary of the association
read it - It was to the effect that they should prepare themselves

in left margin against the following :- was Jones present at this meeting?
with arms to protect themselves from any attempt that
might be made against them & to organise themselves into
bodies & be united & firm - the signature to this letter was
cut out but Davis gave it out to have come from Frost -
On the same Evening a messenger was present who had
come from a Delegate meeting which had been held
at some other place I cannot tell where - He said that
the Delegates had ordered him to put the people in mind
of the questions that were put to them at Blackwood on
Whitmonday, he then repeated the questions which were
put to the people on that occasion - Vizt
Will you support the convention in whatever measures
they proceed to adopt with all your might - come weal

come woe? He also said the Delegates at the meeting of Monday
had agreed that a torchlight meeting should be held & that
the people should hold themselves in readiness to attend well
armed when called upon - and that some means should then
be considered how the people's Charter should be carried into
effect - This person also told us we were to meet every night
until Sunday - I did not attend until Sunday morning the
3rd Nov[embe]r - On that morning between 7 & 8 I went from Pontypool
to Abersychan in company with John Dyer who was riding a horse hired
for Jones - On arriving at Abersychan we went to David Richards's
Beer house where I saw Jones & about 20 people Jones shewed a pistol and said that he expected Jordan (the Constable) every minute - & that if he came he would only get a Ball through his head - I heard some
of the people say they had no arms - Jones told them to go to the Race
Course that night & there would be plenty of arms there - He
mentioned Williams of the Blaina as having a great number
of Guns & pistols & about 1500 pikes coming home that night - He then
told them to collect themselves together and begin about
2 o'clock to force all they could to go along with
them to the Race course He said "prick them along with your pikes & make them
come" - He further said that the next day there should be
Placards posted up in Newport announcing whatever was
requisite & which should begin with "We the Executive government
of England" & that they should be signed "John Frost President" -
He then ordered me & some others to go to Chapman's the Confectioners'
to tell him that the old Lady would be down about 7 o'clock that
evening & he (Chapman) must meet him (Jones) at Pontypool that
Evening on the Race course - I gave the message & then went back to
Pontypool - I went to the Race course between 10 & 11- & on the

Road fell in with Jones & others - they were most of them armed -
I attempted to go away but was forced to go with them to the New Inn
(Prosser's) - the House was full of armed men there
I saw Jones come in - He ordered the men out & told them
they were to go on to Newport in 3 parties - the pikes first, guns
next & the others with what weapons they could muster
I made my escape and went home to bed -
