William Williams of
Abersychan Labourer in the Pentwyn Iron Works
States -
last between 9 & 10 o'clock
5 & 6 On Sunday night last I was
at work at the Pentwyn Furnaces with
other workmen - about 100 men came
about 9 o'clock into the Cast House
they had Pikes & sticks and ordered us
to stop the work and said if we did not
stop they would make us - Some of them
said if we did not stop working they
would make an end of us - all the
men at the Furnaces stopped because
they were afraid - they hollered out "
all come along if you don't we'll make you"
- I went with them
for about a quarter of a mile when
I made my escape from them and
went home to bed - about 4 o'clock
on the Monday morn' - I heard knocking
at the door of my Father's house where
I lodged - - the
men at the door called out get up - but
I did not then - about an hour afterwards
I again heard knocking at the Door and
men calling out "Get up" - I then got up
Page 2:
my Father and a Lodger also got
up - My Father opened the front door &
a fellow workman named
John Spencer shortly after came in &
asked me if I was going down to
see what they were going at - He and I
then went to Pontnewydd and were
going towards Pontypool along the Tram
road when we were stopped by several
men who told us we should not go that
road - the men stopped & in about 10 minutes
they told us to come on, and we followed,
more than 50 of us - We went
on through Pontypool on the road to
Newport and did not stop till we
came to the Newport Turnpike Gate, I saw William
Jones (commonly called Jones the Watchmaker)
come from a House a little distance
from the road in company with 2 other persons the House was a new built House
rough cast in front - there were fresh
broken stones laid on the road leading
from the Turnpike road to the House -
Jones and the 2 men joined our
and we all came to the Turnpike
Gate - Jones was amongst the foremost
at that time - there were about 200 men
present there - Jones said we had better
follow him up that road, and not go into
Town - and we then walked up a road
Page 3:
which turned off from the Turnpike
road to the right and we all followed
him - We stopped at a Gate or a Hurdle on the
left hand side of the road or lane
above a quarry - a man who
looked like a collier was
sitting on the Gate or Hurdle - he told us
it was
no use to go into Town because
there had been an engagement with
the Soldiers and he saw 2 or 3 men
killed - The party then scattered themselves
I went over the Gate or Hurdle into the Field and
came into Newport at the back of the
Town across the fields - It was between
11 and 12 o'clock when I got into Town
