John Pollock I am a Dock Laborer - I live at Pillgwenlly- near
the new Dock - I went to St. Paul's Church on
Sunday the third November instant both
Morning and Evening - I left the Church at
Eight o'Clock in the Evening - I went home -
I had my tea and went to bed - It was
about nine o'Clock when I went to bed -
about half an hour after I was in bed I heard
two raps at the door - I heard the door
opened - I heard a strange voice ask
for Patrick Hickey - I heard my landlady
call out "Mr. Hickey - you're wanted" - I
saw Hickey get up and go down Stairs-
I then got out of bed - I went down Stairs to
light the Candle - I saw two men in the
room - I lit the Candle - My Landlady
^ Mrs Glynn said I could have done that for you - you
need not have come down Stairs" - I should
Know the two men if I saw them again -
I returned to my bed room with a lighted
Candle and went into bed - in half an
hour after I returned to bed I heard another
rap at the front door - - Immediately after this rap I
heard my landlady calling out "get up
lads there's some one wants you here" -
Myself, Hickey, and John Murphy slept in
one Room - We all got up - and
went down stairs - I saw ^ the same two men
inside the door - They said addressing
all three - "make haste and come on -
we have no time for delay" - I went in
company with Hickey, and John Murphy,
with the two men- we were joined
by a great many other men outside - We

went across the Canal near the Brickyard
we went into a House - we went up Stairs-

into a room - a man was there eating
his Supper - I should know him again
if I were to see him - A woman
apparently his Wife was also in the Room -
the man said "Where is that Book" - a
Book (like a bible) was produced - the
man said "Hickey - you had better swear
these men in" meaning myself and others
then in the Room - Hickey refused
He then took the Book himself - he said
to me "do you know what you are going
about my Chap" - I answered "no I do not"-
He then said "you mus'nt be frightened
you mus'nt let any one bribe you for any
money - you must fight for the Chartists-"
He then gave me the Book - I took it in
in my left hand - he made me take it in
my right hand- saying "so help you
God - Kiss the book"- I did so - He
then gave the book to the others - I saw
them put it up to their mouths - I then,
in Company with the others, went down
Stairs- the man who had administered
the Oath went with us - He gave Some of
the men a bar of Iron apiece - He gave
me a short bar- We went on by the
Canal side until we came to the first
turning on the Pontypool Road - myself
and another man ^ then ran away and hid
ourselves in a Ditch - when the others
were passed by we went home - Hickey
ran away when we got to the Dock Tavern -
When the men came the second time
I heard the Landlady ask them
what they wanted with two drunken

men, and that a boy, meaning myself, was of no use
to them - the men said - "never mind -
let them come with us"-
