Newport Chartists Vol.12, p.43
Description
[top right margin:-] 43
I was in the Habit of seeing him ^ almost daily for some time
previously - I think he was absent for a short time
previous, and during his absence his Wife supplied me --
with Milk- I remember seeing the prisoner on Monday
the 4th November Instant, it was ^ about 4 o'Clock in the afternoon
I saw him opposite my own Door serving his Customers -
with milk as usual- I was then the other side of the Street
from him and could not be deceived in its being him-
I heard that there was a great noise in Newport and that
the Chartists were coming down to Pill - I had heard
this a few minutes previous to my seeing the Prisoner -
I closed my Shutters in consequence - I believe that Every
one in Pill who Kept either a Shop or Public House-
closed their Shutters -- The prisoner when I was closing
my Shutters came up the Street and laughed when he saw
we were closing the Shutters- he said nothing - I have never
heard the prisoner say anything about the Chartists since
I discontinued taking Milk of[f] him - I have not -
spoken to him or he to me since that time - I know
nothing of the prisoners Character-
