Jacob Thomas sworn says I am
a Shop keeper at Maesy-cwmmur in
the parish of Bedwas - I know Lewis
Rowland the Prisoner is the Man, I know
William Smith of the Angel there was a
Chartists Lodge held there, Lewis Rowland
was the Clerk - I did not join the Lodge
but I did give him some Money I did not
take a Card - the Angel is at Maes-y-Cwmmur
I remember being at the Angel at one of
those Meetings on the Friday night before
the Riots - I think was November the first
I wont be sure but I think so - Lewis
Rowland was there, he was writing some
I cant say what he did write, it was
on Paper - I did see a Copy Book on the
Table before him, he did say about
providing some Arms - Lewis Rowland
the Prisoner spoke in Welsh, He said
he wished every body to provide themselves

with Arms, something like Arms
Mandrills or the handles of Mandrills
or something like that - I asked him
before the others what he wanted
with Arms - He said that every person
may face his enemy - I said that
such things were not wanted and
for them to be peaceable - then he said
addressing himself to me such things
are wanted to meet such like you
If a poor man was to get ‚£5 of Goods
to you - you would arrest him immediately
unless he paid you - I then got up
from the place where I was sitting and
went up Stairs - He said it was only
for them to come down here (to Newport)
and then the Soldiers would give up
their Arms quietly - He wished every
person who was willing to come down
to give his Name - I said I would
never come - I told them to perfectly

understand what I was saying
That I would never go with them the
length of my Foot for any such purpose
Then I went down Stair's and made
towards Home - The Prisoner said about
News when we first met that evening
He said he had had news that day
He said he knew himself when they
were to go to Newport, he did not
tell us when we was to go - He said
the Soldiers would be frightened when
they all went to Newport at seeing
such a Number and that the Soldiers
would give up their Arms without
trouble - I did not hear him say what
they should do if the Soldiers did not
give up their Arms-
