Patchwork quilt made by Lydia Jones, Aberystwyth, c1900

Description

This quilt was made by Lydia Jones 37 High Street Aberystwyth. She died in 1924 and was a professional quilter who made quilts to order. In Wales this was very common, the client would provide the patchwork and backing and the quilter would turn it into a quilt. In rural areas itinerant quilters would bring their own quilting frame and stay in a farm for a few weeks, making a range of quilts from the owners cloth, either patchwork or wholecloth. This quilt is typical of the pretty pastel floral patchwork that most people think of when they think of Victorian quilt, and as such inspired designers like Laura Ashley and Cath Kidson.

In Wales it was very common for the seamstresses in towns and villages to make quilts to order for the housewives living around them. Annually, if she could afford it, the mistress of the house would buy fabric for a new quilt from her local shop or market. She would take it to the village quilter, along with her choice of wadding, and her winter bedding would be replenished.

Quilts were recorded as part of a rich household inventory as early as the 16th century. By the twentieth century quilting was under threat. Commercially made bedspreads and eiderdowns could be bought from shops and were relatively inexpensive.
