Mike first visited Skomer in the Spring of 1962 when he was 13 years old. In 1965, he became the first voluntary warden along with a school friend, Brian Jones, and was later appointed Warden of Skomer from 1976 - 1986.

The Mew Stone protrudes from the sea at the Southernmost point of the island, its top is 197 feet (60 metres) above sea level.
