Children being placed in an ambulance during the Spanish Civil War, c.1937

Description

The Spanish caption on the reverse of this photograph reads: "The Government of Euskadi, heroically defending their freedom threatened, serves all children and see that loving hands them away from the unbelievable cruelty of the hordes of Hitler and Mussolini. Children's Sanatorium Gorriz taken to the ambulance." This suggests that the children were being moved from the Sanatorium to another location by the Basque government to protect them from attack from Franco's Nationalist forces. This photograph is part of a collection brought back to Wales by John Williams Hughes, a volunteer from Anglesey who assisted the humanitarian effort during the war. He used these photographs in his talks and lectures following his return.
