Drawing by a school child during the Spanish Civil War, c.1937

Description

This drawing shows a market scene with a Verduleria or greengrocers and people going about their business and a plane flying in the skies above. The German Luftwaffe, on the orders of General Franco, bombed towns such as Durango and Guernica in the Basque Country on busy market days, killing hundreds of people. The drawing is part of a collection brought back to Wales by the humanitarian volunteer John Williams Hughes from Anglesey.
