SS Unhenfels German ship captured by Royal Navy 1939

Description

This is a photograph of a German merchant vessel that was captured off South Africa by ships from the Royal Navy, following attack by the aeroplanes from the RSAF. Damage to the ship can clearly be seen and it is believed the photograph was taken shortly after capture. The ship was put into service of the Merchant Navy and renamed Empire Ability. She was torpedoed and lost to a German U Boat on 1941. This photograph was in the possession of Charles Pope, RN Veteran, who served on Africa station during this period of the war and went on to serve until the end of 1945 across the globe.
