Letters from Corrie Shane, the secretary of the League of Jewish Women, to Michael Bogod, treasurer of the Reform Synagogue, about funding the training for bereavement services, Cardiff, 22 January 1988 and 27 April 1988
Description
Letters from Corrie Shane, the secretary of the League of Jewish Women, to Michael Bogod, treasurer of the Reform Synagogue. The content is about the synagogue's financial contribution to a counselling course at Cardiff University, which members of the League of Jewish Women were to attend. It was used to set up a bereavement service known as "Care Concern", Cardiff, 22 January 1988 and 27 April 1988.
The League of Jewish Women is a charity run by volunteers who organise educational, community and cultural activities. They have been actively recruiting members from all Jewish denominations and communities since 1943.
The Cardiff Reform Synagogue was founded in 1948 as the Cardiff New Synagogue. The following year, it became a constituent member of the Movement for Reform Judaism. Born in reaction against the more restrictive traditions of the Orthodox Judaism of Cardiff Hebrew Congregation, such as the prohibition of driving on the Sabbath and the ban on interfaith marriages, the new Synagogue appealed to the immigrants who had fled the war-torn Europe, where the Reform movement was already well-established. The congregation worships in a converted Methodist Chapel on Moira Terrace they acquired in 1952.
