Digital Story from the Bawso Stories Project. In her story "First Child", Zoya describes the huge impact of feeling heard by her doctor when she was feeling uncomfortable during a hospital stay to give birth.
English transcript: The moment when my child, first child was born, so I was alone in the hospital and I was very scared, because I didn’t know that much language and the lady who was delivering to me. I don’t know… I didn’t feel very comfortable. I was so scared. Like I was crying, crying.
But when the doctor came, so when he saw my situation, he said, what happened, what is wrong? I was scared to tell him with this lady. I don’t know. I didn’t feel comfortable. So, he changed the midwife for me.
I was so surprised that he done that for me. That moment, I never forget. Even I am from another place, they done something for me, you know. So, I felt that, yeah, this is my home. They did listen and understand my thinking.
Because they did understand, you know, I was very happy, because this was my first child. I was alone, no family, nothing, and they just asked me why you are not comfortable, for what reason? So, when I told the reason, they straight away changed, and I was surprised that they can do for me and I’m not belonging to their country.
So, it was something shocking and something, you know, also exciting. I was very, very, I cannot describe what they done for me. I was very happy at that time, yeah.
