Digital Story from the Bawso Stories Project. In her story "Red Top", Precious tells a story from her childhood in Bangaldesh that was inspired by seeing the painting "Rocky Wooded Landscape" by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) at National Museum Cardiff.
English transcript: When I was 10 years old, I was playing with my friends by our pool, because this is village right, so there's many animals like cows, cat, sometimes snakes maybe, yeah, that's why I'm so scared of snakes. While we were playing, the cows next to us, they are eating, the grasses, right. So we're like, oh he's fine, let's just play.
All of a sudden, my friend is like, “Run, run, run!” to me, I was like, “Why would I run?” They were like, “Just run!” I said, “Why?” And they were like “Look back, look at your back!” So I saw that one cow is running behind me, he's following me, and I was like, “Oh my God, what is that!” I was running and running and running.
And then I came to my home, and my mum was like “What happened, why are you, you know, choking, what happened, what happened with you?” And I was like, “I don't know mum, the cow is running behind me, the cow is following me, I don't know why!”
And then my grandma is like, “Are you stupid, you are wearing red clothes!” And I was like,” So what, what is wrong with wearing red top?” And then my grandmother, she said, “We believe, if we were a red clothes, that cow follows you until he hit you, he want to hit you, so don't wear red top in front of cow or something because, I don’t know, they get angry.” So that was the one story.
