Interview with Preet Mooneeram on Ravi Mooneeram by Farah Allibhai
Description
Preet Mooneeram talks about his late father Ravi Mooneeram, born in Mauritius on May 7, 1932, who was a pioneering educator and community leader in Cardiff. He faced significant challenges, including a cyclone that destroyed his home and delayed his medical studies. Despite these setbacks, he completed his degree in 1966 and taught at Sintwell High School. He also ran 28 The Parade, a community centre in Cardiff, which hosted various cultural and educational activities, including summer schools and exchange programs.
Over its 25+ years, the venue hosted diverse events and provided education, assistance, and a welcoming space for multicultural communities such as Greek, Italian, Yemeni, Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani, Ismaili, and others. It was a hub for integration and cross-cultural understanding, fostering connections between communities even during global conflicts.
Ravi Mooneeram’s dedication to community integration and his humility were recognized with an MBE in 1981. His legacy continues to inspire inclusivity and social cohesion.
