Interview with Mehboob and Shelina Allibhai by Farah Allibhai on settling in Wales and the Ismaili community

Description

Mehboob and Shelina Allibhai share their family's journey from Uganda to the UK. Mehboob's father, originally from Gujarat, moved to Uganda under the Aga Khan's guidance, while Shelina's mother’s family traced roots to Nairobi and Persia. After Uganda expelled Asians in the 1970s, they moved to Cardiff via British protectorate papers. The Ismaili Muslim community played a crucial role in their settlement, providing a sense of faith and belonging through Jamatkhana gatherings. Shelina reflects on her current life in Wales, balancing caregiving and community involvement. She also expresses concern about the treatment of refugees today, acknowledging the contrast between her family’s relatively fortunate experience and the challenges faced by modern migrants.
