Memories and reflections of a lifetimes work in Carmarthenshire's dairy industry - Alun Voyle.
Description
A native of Llanddarog, Alun Voyle spent the majority of his working life in the milk industry in Carmarthenshire. He did his military service in the late 1950s with the South Wales Borderers in Brecon followed by a spell in Germany. He then returned to Carmarthen to work in the milk factory in Pensarn in the early 1960s. Initially in the factory making cheese and then later driving lories to collect churns from the farms and delivering Channel islands milk to the Hafod dairy in Swansea. Alun shares happy memories of dairy factory life and and of collecting churns from the Pencader / Dolgran and Brechfa areas. He speaks of the farming communities and practices in these areas. He mentions the challenges of collecting churns in the snowy winter of 1963 and in hot summers. He subsequently spent 32 years working for the artifical insemination department of the Milk Marketing Board in Carmarthen. He reflects on the changes introduced at the demise of the MMB. In addition, his long term perspective leads him to have concerns about the social, linguistic and economic declines he now oberves in rural Carmarthenshire. The interview was conducted in Welsh in Carmarthen by Anthony Rees (Carmarthenshire milk stand project). 23 April 2024.
