The Civil Defence Corps was an organisation borne out of the Second World War. In 1935 the Home Office established the Civil Defence Service as Air Raid Precautions (ARP) to provide a controlled response to effect of German bombing raids. This included wardens, rescue services, first aid, gas identification and fire watchers. The Civil Defence Service disbanded when the war ended in May 1945. In 1949 the Civil Defence Corps was established to prepare for potential nuclear attacks and other emergencies.
