Interview (part 1) with Karim Meghji

Description

Karim Meghji recounts his family's journey from Uganda to the UK after being expelled by Idi Amin in 1972. They initially settled in a refugee camp in North Wales before moving to Rhondda Valleys, where he grew up in a supportive community with his adoptive grandparents. He describes the challenges of single parenthood after his marriage ended and his struggles with raising his children, Azard and Ashefa. Despite facing hardships, including homelessness and an unhealthy living situation, he learned to adapt, cook, and care for his children. He found support through community services, which helped him build skills and eventually led him to a career in social work, where he obtained a degree. Throughout his journey, he faced barriers related to his identity and socioeconomic status but continued to grow personally and professionally. He married again, had more children, and witnessed their academic and personal successes. The interview concludes with reflections on his family's accomplishments and his evolving career, emphasizing resilience and the importance of support systems.
