Interview (part 4) with Karim Meghji

Description

In this interview, Karim shares his life journey, beginning with his family's move to Cardiff in hopes of receiving community support for his mother, which ultimately did not materialize. Throughout his life, he faced significant challenges, including the illness and eventual passing of his elderly mother after a stroke, which deeply affected him. Karim reflects on his upbringing in Uganda, highlighting the strong community bonds and fond memories of family life there, including fishing and playing volleyball. After his parents' deaths when he was a teenager, he felt the weight of responsibility to support his family. Despite moving back to the valleys in search of a supportive community, he found it lacking in Cardiff, where he and his family struggled. Karim expresses strong views on cultural practices, particularly criticizing the commercialization of community support, contrasting it with the mutual aid traditions he experienced in his youth. He emphasizes the importance of family and community, recounting how his friends and local inhabitants supported him through tough times. His fond memories of Uganda vividly depict a close-knit, resourceful family life, characterized by sharing and collaboration. Despite his hardships, Karim speaks with pride about his roots and the resilience instilled in him and his children.
