10. Robert Owen's utopian New Harmony legacy lives on 200 years later

Description

The panel highlights how Robert Owen’s legacy in New Harmony, Indiana, lives on 200 years later. Although his utopian experiment ended, the town became a centre for science, education, and social reform. His descendants, especially Kenneth and Jane Owen, helped preserve and promote it. Today, Historic New Harmony is managed by the University of Southern Indiana, continuing Owen’s ideals of equality, cooperation, and innovation.

This exhibition panel is from the ‘Robert Owen Utopian Legacy Exhibition’, originally held at Newtown Library in May of 2025, on the life and legacy of Robert Owen (1771-1858) the philanthropic Welsh Business & Social Entrepreneur and pioneer of infant education and the co-operative movement.
