Interview with Ann Mayers

Description

Interview with Anne Myers by Year 5 pupils at Ysgol Carreg Hir primary School, 14th March 2024, about her childhood growing up in Briton Ferry.

(00:00:29–00:00:50) - Childhood Shops in Briton Ferry

Anne Myers recalls how there were many more shops in Briton Ferry during her childhood compared to now. She talks about having to travel to Port Talbot for shoe fittings, as there were no shops in Briton Ferry that measured children's feet.

(00:01:00–00:02:23) - Local Shops

Anne describes various shops in Briton Ferry, including a cooperative, a small grocery shop called Elsie Island, Dillwyn's sweet shop (her favorite), and the chemist. She highlights how Dillwyn's was particularly significant to her childhood.

(00:03:23–00:05:23) - Shopping Habits

Anne reflects on how shopping habits were different back then, with fewer clothing options and the tradition of going to Swansea for shopping trips, despite her dislike of the journey due to motion sickness.

(00:02:36–00:03:03) - Changes in Shops Over Time

Anne notes how many of the shops in Briton Ferry have closed over time, with only a few remaining, like the chemist. She mentions that even the location of the chemist has changed.

(00:06:00–00:09:41) - School Memories

Anne shares memories of her school days, including the lack of central heating, the tradition of milk breaks, and the strict school environment. She fondly remembers the local park and school.
