Agnes Twiston Hughes in graduate robes, possibly from completing her law degree

Description

Agnes Twiston Hughes (1895 - 1981) was the first Welsh woman lawyer. She was born and raised in Conwy at Coed Celyn in Cadnant Park. After passing the Law Society Honours Examination in 1923, she worked at her father's law firm, J.W Hughes, which still exists today. She was principal partner from 1949 until her retirement in 1961. She also served as an alderman on Conwy Borough Council before becoming the first female mayor in 1954. She campaigned to save the Telford Bridge and aided its preservation by the National Trust.
