Description

The Pontypool Front Row is without doubt, Pontypool RFC's most famous export. World famous trio of Charlie Faulkner, Bobby Windsor and Graham Price first appeared as a unit in Pontypool colours on 5th September 1973 against Pontypool Junior Union at Pontypool Park in a 37-3 victory. Their last Pontypool game was at Pontypool Park on 25th October 1980 contributing to a 59-10 home win over Oxford. They represented Wales on 19 occasions, first in Paris in January 1975 in a shock 25-10 win for Wales. Their final appearance for their country was again in Paris four years later in a narrow 13-14 defeat for Wales. During their stay in the Welsh Team, Wales won the Grand Slam twice and the Triple Crown three times. They received their ultimate honour in 1977 when, as a replacement, Charlie joined Bobby and Graham on the British Lions Tour to New Zealand and Fiji. The Front Row played in three of the last five games of the tour. Apart from being depicted in paintings, photographs and ceramics the Front Row were immortalised as the 'Viet Gwent' in a song by Max Boyce, the popular Welsh entertainer. The song's chorus being 'Up and under here we go, are you ready , yes or no? Up and under here we go, It's the song of the Pontypool Front Row.'
