Newspaper cutting of the trial of General China in Kenya
Description
This newspaper clipping was provided by Mr Ernie Hughes, who served with the RAF at RAF Eastleigh in Kenya during the 'Mau Mau' insurgency. General China, real name 'Waruhiu Itote, was an important leader of the Mau Mau and stood trial on 1st February 1954. He was found guilty of conspiring with persons carrying firearms and ammunition. He was sentenced to death, but this was commuted to a custodial term. Ernie saved this newspaper cutting for prosperity. The Kenya Emergency (1952-60) was a British military post-war conflict. Although the rising was defeated, many Kenyans still regard it as a significant step on their country's road to independence. Ernie's full collection can be viewed online at the West Wales Veterans Archive National Service collection on the People’s Collection Wales website.
