RAF Airmen and Kenyan Police Banana plantation RAF Eastleigh 1950s
Description
This photograph was provided by Ernie Hughes, who served as a 'Firefighter' at RAF Eastleigh in Kenya in the mid 1950's. Ernie has kept several photographs from his time in Kenya. Ernie explained how airmen would spend periods of leave on farms, in exchange for food and accommodation. During this time the airmen would patrol the vast farmland, armed with .303 rifles. The farmers welcomed the servicemen, as armed Mau Mau terrorists targeted farms owned by 'white' skinned farming families.
