Abercwmeiddaw quarry, Upper Corris. 1988

Description

A copy of a photograph of the waste tips of Abercwmeiddaw quarry, Upper Corris. it shows the incline, the very high retaining wall along the road and to the left, the flight of steps up the wall, opposite Dafarn Newydd. Julia Gunn's grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother all lived in Dafarn Newydd, opposite the steps and high wall. Villagers complained that they could hear the tips moving during periods of heavy rain. Eventually many years later, the authorities agreed to landscape the tips to avoid another disaster like the one at Aberfan in the 1960's.This photograph was taken by the late Gwen Hough who lived at 1 Gwyngyll, Upper Corris. She was an archivist at Dolgellau.
