David Remnant, Volunteer at Penygraig - Valleys Kids
Description
This interview is part of our Valleys Voices Heritage Project, where we spoke to staff (past and present), volunteers and community members about their experiences with Valleys Kids over our rich, almost 50 year history.
David first became involved with Valleys Kids in December 2012, starting as a volunteer in the factory after approaching staff and offering his help. Over the years, he has supported a wide range of tasks, including helping with refreshments during events, decorating, repairs, and maintaining the grounds. He even served as Santa twice, creating fond and humorous memories.
Valleys Kids is important to David because it gives children a safe place to go and brings people in the community together. On a personal level, volunteering has given him purpose and enjoyment in retirement. He values the social side of coming in, meeting people, and contributing to the organisation.
David’s wife Ann also volunteered in the early years, helping with registers. Although David has had breaks in volunteering due to health issues, he has always returned. He recalls enjoying interactions with young people during events and appreciated hearing their hopes and perspectives.
Overall, Valleys Kids has given David a sense of belonging, routine, and meaningful contribution—something he feels he would have missed had he stayed at home with little interaction.
