Marion Stokes, Trustee - Valleys Kids
Description
This interview is part of our Valleys Voices Heritage Project, where we spoke to staff (past and present), volunteers and community members about their experiences with Valleys Kids over our rich, almost 50 year history.
She first became involved with Valleys Kids in January 1988, shortly after her husband passed away. Seeking company and something meaningful to do after work, she visited the centre, spoke with Margaret, and began volunteering the following week. She started in the after-school clubs for children aged 8–11, running arts and crafts sessions and supporting the groups twice a week.
Over the years, she helped with a wide range of activities, including running stalls at fundraising fêtes and supporting events despite limited funding. She became well-known to the children for providing food, selling tip-tops, and making sure everyone was well cared for.
She has taken part in many major celebrations, including visits from Prince Charles (now King Charles) and Prince William to various Valley’s Kids sites. She believes Valley’s Kids plays a vital role in the community, offering an essential outlet for children—especially in an area with few other opportunities. Even with financial challenges, she feels the support Valley’s Kids provides makes a significant difference to local families and young people.
