Ellen Davies, Family Development Worker - Valleys Kids

Description

This interview is part of our Valleys Voices Heritage Project, where we spoke to staff (past and present), volunteers and community members about their experiences with Valleys Kids over our rich, almost 50 year history.

Ellen first became aware of Valleys Kids in 2017 while working as a supply primary school teacher. Through her friend Leah, she joined the summer programme Make, Move and Munch, which welcomed people with education experience to deliver sessions. This was her first involvement with the organisation.

After leaving teaching and experiencing a difficult period—including pregnancy, postnatal depression, and lockdown—Ellen was looking to return to work. Leah connected her with Cath and Deb, who were seeking someone for the family team. Ellen had previously expressed her interest in full-time work with Valleys Kids, and she joined the team when the opportunity arose.

Valleys Kids became deeply important to Ellen during a time when she felt lost after leaving her teaching career and struggling through early motherhood. Working with the family team gave her purpose, confidence, and a safe, supportive environment. She values the sense of understanding, non-judgment, and personal growth it has brought her. She loves working in the community, experiencing variety each day, forming strong connections, and seeing how small actions can make a real difference.

Ellen believes Valleys Kids is important in local communities—many of which face deprivation—because staff come from the same backgrounds as the people they support. This makes the organisation relatable, empathetic, and grounded in real understanding. Valleys Kids offers hope, aspiration, and genuine human connection.
