Lloyd Bradford, Sparc Flight Wings Member
Description
This interview is part of our Valleys Voices Heritage Project, where we spoke to staff (past and present), volunteers and community members about their experiences with Valleys Kids over our rich, almost 50 year history.
Lloyd became involved with Valleys Kids after leaving Spectacle Theatre, where he had been for around 10 years. Looking for a new challenge, he heard about the Flight Wings group and approached Miranda at the Pop Factory to join.
At first, Lloyd was nervous and unsure if he would fit in, as he didn’t know anyone in the group. But John, Will, Gemma and the team made him feel welcome, and he quickly began to feel he belonged. Unlike his previous experiences, he formed strong friendships—John and Will have become his best friends.
One of his favourite memories is his first trip to Little Bryn Gwyn. He had never stayed away from home before and was very anxious, but with support from Gemma and the group he felt safe, gained independence, and enjoyed activities like visiting a castle and going for meals.
Valleys Kids is extremely important to Lloyd. Before joining, he felt isolated and didn’t have many friends. Flight Wings gave him a place where he belonged, looked forward to going each week, and could grow in confidence. It also gave him the chance to welcome new members and help others feel settled.
He believes Valleys Kids is vital for the community because it offers opportunities—especially in drama—for people who may never have had them, and provides adults with a sense of purpose, connection, and belonging.
