Ray Beaumont, Former Finance Officer - Valleys Kids
Description
This interview is part of our Valleys Voices Heritage Project, where we spoke to staff (past and present), volunteers and community members about their experiences with Valleys Kids over our rich, almost 50 year history.
Ray first became involved with what later became Valleys Kids through Penygraig Community Projects, teaching evening computer classes when computers were still new to most people. While photocopying worksheets one evening, he was invited by Richard and Margaret to join Valleys Kids, eventually leaving his social services job to work with them.
Ray’s roles evolved from office work to office manager and later finance manager, working closely with staff like Anne Griffiths and Michelle. Alongside his administrative responsibilities, he also threw himself into hands-on activities: teaching traditional photography, leading art and sketching evenings, and helping plan and support the organisation’s long-distance annual bike rides. Ray and his son Gareth mapped the routes, organised logistics, and supported the children on the rides—with Ray driving ahead in his van stocked with drinks and snacks, taking photos and earning the nickname “the General.”
These experiences created lasting memories for many young people who still recognise him years later. For Ray, Valleys Kids has been important because of its spirit: a place where people pitch in, support each other, and are encouraged to try new things.
