Interview with Roger Wilcox - Former Coordinator of Valleys Kids Dinas Project
Description
This interview is part of our Valleys Voices Heritage Project, where we spoke to staff (past and present), volunteers and community members about their experiences with Valleys Kids over our rich, almost 50 year history.
Roger Wilcox began at Valleys Kids after leaving his career as a self-employed motor mechanic to run their motor project with young offenders, teaching basic car maintenance and even taking part in banger racing. Coming from a business background, he initially found the organisation’s family-like culture very different, but grew to deeply appreciate its values, openness, and the meaningful work it enabled.
Over nearly three decades, he took part in major activities—from residentials to international projects—and built strong, long-term relationships with young people and families. Valleys Kids helped him develop into a skilled youth and community worker, sending him to university and surrounding him with experienced colleagues. In return, he committed himself to delivering high-quality, values-driven work and passing on skills and confidence to countless young people.
He stayed because he loved the work, the trust he was given, the simple and supportive management structure, and the genuine impact he saw every day. Roger believes he made a real difference, helping people with a wide range of issues and supporting individuals who may not have managed without the organisation’s help.
