An interview with Steve Davies, Artistic Director for Spectacle Theatre

Description

Interview with Steve Davies. This interview is part of our Valleys Voices Heritage Project, where we spoke to staff (past and present), volunteers and community members about their experiences with Valleys Kids over our rich, almost 50 year history.

His connection to Valley’s Kids began in the mid-1980s through Spectacle Theatre Company. Spectacle regularly rehearsed productions at Penygraig, often premiering shows there before touring Wales. Because many young people and staff were involved in both organisations, there was always a strong link in terms of community development, shared values, and joint projects.

He has long admired Valley’s Kids’ approach, particularly through initiatives like Bike Club, and deeply respects the leadership and vision of people like Richard and Margaret. Over time, Spectacle also became based at the Factory (Pop Factory) building, where Valley’s Kids provided generous access to office space, rehearsal rooms, and community facilities. This allowed Spectacle to expand its groups and training sessions, bringing together participants from across the valleys.

He speaks highly of the Factory’s art gallery, emphasising the high quality and diversity of work exhibited—from internationally recognised artists to local creators. The venue has been a lifeline for Spectacle, enabling them to run rehearsals, community programmes, and training events they otherwise could not afford.

Looking to the future, he expresses concern about funding cuts, the decline of youth centres, and limited pathways for young people to enter theatre work. He stresses that both Spectacle and Valley’s Kids have historically acted as “incubators,” bringing talent, creativity, and new people into the area. These organisations not only create opportunities but also attract and retain committed individuals who become key contributors to the community.

He believes the complementary approaches of Spectacle and Valley’s Kids — taking theatre and support directly to where people live — have transformed the area. Despite challenges, he hopes both organisations can continue their vital work and maintain bright futures.
