Description

View of Big Pit winding gear.
Big Pit is the former Blaenavon colliery, now the National Coal Museum welcoming thousands of visitors each year. At one time it was one of hundreds of collieries throughout Wales. What you see here could be seen in villages and communities across the Welsh coalfield. In the peak year of 1913 over 200,000 men were employed in the 620 mines in south Wales.
