"Noah" The animal costumes Mask Society 1937

Description

The costumes for the Mask Society production of Noah in 1937 were based on the original Motley designs used in the the 1935 Michael St. Denis production in the New Theatre , London in 1935.
They were designed and executed by Sheila Newton.
Writing later Sheila remembers how the Mask Society developed;
For several years we rehearsed a play in September and presented it in the following January when John (Gibbs) came home from Cambridge and Louis (Bielski) from Oxford. At first the royalties we should have to pay formed quite an obstacle but John's mother (Gladys Gibbs) who was often present at our discussions, offered to pay them from her bridge winnings . She explained that she did not like to play for money, but that a lot of the people she played with did not think one could play seriously unless playing for a penny a hundred.
