Llanthony Abbey by Varley and by Hearne

Description

If we compare these two pictures , one by Varley the other by Hearne we notice that the tracery of the West Window has collapsed. This was in fact witnessed by Colt Hoare on one of his visits.
This is about the time that Walter Savage Landor is struggling to realise his vision for the valley. Looking back some 40 years after he has left the valley Llandor wrote;
Llanthony! an uncongenial clime,
And the broad wings of restless Time,
Have rudely swept thy massy walls
And rockt thy abbots in their palls.
I loved thee by thy streams of yore
By distant streams I love thee more,
For never is the heart so true
As bidding what we love adieu
