Wifred Charles Powell (1898-1978) was born in Garndiffaith. Lying about his age, he volunteered for service in the Royal Navel Volunteer Reserve (R.N.V.R) and later served as a wireless operator onboard the minesweeper HMS Hambledon when launched in 1917.
