Official document from the Imperial War Graves Commission requesting the payment of thirteen shillings and eight pence for a personal inscription on the grave of Sergeant Charles Butler. The inscription reads: In a Hero's Grave you lie, But in our hearts, You never die, R.I.P. Of Irish decent, Charles Butler moved to Tredegar before the Ist World War where he met his future wife Mary McCarthy. Charles and Mary had four children and they moved to Monmouthshire where Charles found work at a local engineering company. He subsequently joined the Royal Engineers and was sadly killed on 4 October 1917 as he was drilling for water in no man's land near Ieper. Charles was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his services and was buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery, 4 kilometres east of Ieper, Belgium.
