A book of poetry written by Elizabeth Rees of Blaenannerch to her brother who was serving in France during the First World War [image 1 of 8]

Description

This scrapbook contains poems written by Elizabeth Anne Rees to her brother Lemuel Thomas Rees during the First World War. She wrote him a poem each year. Lemuel Thomas Rees, son of John and Sarah Rees, from Cross Inn near Blaenannerch volunteered for the Army at the outbreak of war in 1914 but was refused because of his chest. He was later conscripted in 1917 and joined the 6th Battalion South Wales Borderers. Sometime in 1917 Rees had a very lucky escape when he was hit by a piece of shrapnel in the chest but was saved by a small Bible he was carrying in his breast pocket. Unfortunately, Lemuel Thomas Rees was killed on 13 November 1918, two days after the Armistice was signed. He is buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille in France.
