Frederick William Griffiths enlisted to the 9th (Service) Battalion the Welsh Regiment at Haverfordwest on 21 May 1915. However, just thirteen days later he was discharged for being under age; at sixteen, he was three years too young to join the Army. He was later conscripted to the Royal Army Service Corps which was responsible for transport and supply of food, water, fuel and general domestic stores during the war.
