Bible, damaged by shrapnel, belonging to Lemuel Thomas Rees of Swansea, First World War [image 1 of 2]
Description
Lemuel Thomas Rees, son of John and Sarah Rees, from Cross Inn near Blaenannerch volunteered for the Army at the outbreak of war in 1914 but was refused because of his chest. He was later conscripted in 1917 and joined the 6th Battalion South Wales Borderers. Sometime in 1917 Rees had a very lucky escape when he was hit by a piece of shrapnel in the chest but was saved by this small Bible he had been given at Sunday School and was carrying in his breast pocket. Unfortunately, Lemuel Thomas Rees was killed on 13 November 1918, two days after the Armistice was signed. He is buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille in France.
