I am glad to say I received cake and cocoa quite safe and was very pleased with it. We had a nice feed for tea the boys say a bit of English cake is as good as a loaf of bread. I have just been up the trenches doing a bit of work and I am up to my neck in muck but the more muck we get in the happier we are. We don't take as much notice of mud as we did in Winchester. Dear Ethel I received photo quite safe and think it is very good of the boys . Tuesday 7th Dear Ethel, I started this letter on Sunday but I did not have time to finish it but I have started again now I expect you are beginning to think I am never going to write I am glad to hear you liked the card. We are having rotten weather, it is snowing all the time and freezing and I can tell you it is cold breaking the ice to have a wash in the morning there is no hot water to wash in.
